    Interware GrandVimage 24-21s Info Dump

Oh I’ve been waiting for a GrandVimage thread! A while back I picked up a lot of GrandVimage Nubus cards. Mostly 24-16. The lot also included five of what look to be demo or prototype boards. Two are labeled 24-21, while the other three are 24-HV. I can’t find any real info on the HV, just...

    chiptripper's finds

So many upgrades I didn’t know about! That’s great, a 40Mhz Classic. How does it perform? I don’t have a loopback cable for the OrangePC 660, but (and my memory is foggy so don’t quote me on this) I think the 660 and PCfx! were the only two that don’t require one?

    chiptripper's finds

I haven’t actually fired it up, do you find it offers much of a performance bump? Looks like it still has to run through the Classic bus, etc.

What I've received as of late...

Nice! Always had a fondness for the IIgs.

Replacing IIsi Power Supply PSU with a new alternative

I have the guts from a IIsi PSU. It’s pretty clean. Only real damage is to the sub-board with the two very leaky SMD caps (which I assume controls soft power). That’s toast, so I am planning to attempt a Meanwell transplant. If you want the guts to fix your trashed PSU, you’re welcome to it...

    chiptripper's finds

Huh! An Applied Engineering TW2325. First real Classic upgrade I’ve seen, I honestly didn’t think they existed. Interesting installation method, using a PLCC to clamp onto the original CPU. I see an FPU socket, looks like there might’ve been a cache card option too? Not much to it, very simple...

Tales of a bombed Quadra 700: the "short" lived victory

Are you certain it’s a proper short? Have you tested for resistance as well as just using the continuity setting? What reading do you get? My probe will sometimes buzz like a short when there’s simply very low resistance. Mac II / IIfx have some circuits like this.

    chiptripper's finds

Oh my! There’s nothing quite like buying a random lot of Mac stuff and finding the holy grail inside! (That’s a 100 MHz Daystar 601 on an LC 630 board, of all things. Previous owner did some surgery on the heatsink to make it fit, but otherwise completely intact.)

Classic II: Boot chime after two or three minutes powered on

Egrets get very crusty on Classic IIs. Surrounded by caps. I recapped one last night and the electrolyte had crept under the board directly below the Egret and gunked up the solder and traces on several ceramic caps too.

A rite of passage! That’s a handy tool given how many compact Macs are now in your care. :)

Classic II: Boot chime after two or three minutes powered on

Perhaps a dying hard drive, is it original?

Color classic wont power in after recap.

Probably related to U7 or U8. Hard to tell from the photos but the trace connecting pin 2 on the egret (that runs under C6) looks broken. Maybe just a shadow or some toasted flux? Sometimes there can be a solder bridge hidden underneath the chip too. Y1 does not typically go bad, but essential...

Color Classic stuck on grey screen

I believe egret failures typically result in no boot or display action whatsoever. That said, be sure to check continuity between Y1 and C56 on the underside of the board. Have you recapped the analog board? Good voltages? Sounds basic, but check the edge connector is clean (socket side too)...

Color Classic - no signs of life

Dang. Shame it’s not just a bad trace. Board is very similar to an LC II, which has a 341S0847, but I’ve not heard of a successful transplant, not that it can’t work, just no successful attempts. Apparently the LC 550 used either the ‘0417 or the ‘0788, so the latter might work. You can...

Color Classic - no signs of life

As I mentioned in your Trading Post post, worth checking the crystal. If the connection rots out between Y1 and the CUDA, you'd get no response from soft power. A trace runs from Y1 to a via, then to a ceramic load cap on the backside of the board. C6 very often rots out that trace or via...
