I have been able to get a 68882 from a LC ( fitted in a small board in the PDS slot) was thinking to remove it and use it in a Classic Colour.

Was wondering if i will see any difference.

You will see two differences:

Software that requires a FPU will be able to run, when it could not run before.

Software that falls back to FPU emulation will run much faster in its FPU-bound code.

Note that there is not very much software that fits into either category. Certain Photoshop filters are the most common examples.

So, you won't notice any difference in day-to-day usage.

I beg to differ on this because:

1) A lot of games like Red Baron/RB II and others uses the FPU for Polygon/image generation. Though they will run without an FPU, they will run slow, jerky and jaggity.

2) A lot of Image Processing & Desktop Publishing programs create better output and takes a hell of a shorter time to process, especially Vector Graphics, Postscript and True Type Fonts. Photoshop Plug-ins, PageMaker and FreeHand/Illustrator are just a few of these programs that a FPU would be very helpful. Without the FPU, processing such work will require a long time to process and the output will be rougher than expected.

In the end it depends on the programs your CC is using. If you are using it for just MicroSoft Office, and Apple/Claris Works, then you will not need an FPU. But if you are doing other things which you notice takes a while for your CC to process, an FPU maybe useful.

This is a good point; there *were* lots of "2.5D" games that used the FPU.

Also, yeah, if you're doing a lot of PostScript, then various DTP apps will do it much faster with the FPU!

Good catch!

I Don't have a CC yet but, I have two LC3's with the fpu's in them and I noticed a performance increase in both. On has photoshop on it and its much faster than before. I felt an increase across the board with the machines. Mostly with multitasking.

And there are also a heap of After Dark Screen savers that need an FPU to run! :D
