Note that there is not very much software that fits into either category. Certain Photoshop filters are the most common examples.

I beg to differ on this because:
1) A lot of games like Red Baron/RB II and others uses the FPU for Polygon/image generation. Though they will run without an FPU, they will run slow, jerky and jaggity.
2) A lot of Image Processing & Desktop Publishing programs create better output and takes a hell of a shorter time to process, especially Vector Graphics, Postscript and True Type Fonts. Photoshop Plug-ins, PageMaker and FreeHand/Illustrator are just a few of these programs that a FPU would be very helpful. Without the FPU, processing such work will require a long time to process and the output will be rougher than expected.
In the end it depends on the programs your CC is using. If you are using it for just MicroSoft Office, and Apple/Claris Works, then you will not need an FPU. But if you are doing other things which you notice takes a while for your CC to process, an FPU maybe useful.
