Getting G3 Whisper Perch USB working

But U1 on the Belkin, the 2052 chip, looks like it has a notch
Sorry, I meant U2 (I can't see what U1 is in the photo I'm looking at) was of interest, then I worked out it was an overcurrent protection chip, it meant it isn't equivalent to the filter that LP2 is part of. LP2 isn't a 2053.

Don't be silly! What really needs to go in that slot is an adapter to interface with the systems of a highly advanced rocket ship!!

But I don't have one of those cards. Are they available for 5v PCI slots? I only have NuBus cards like that.

Sorry, I can't help but I can provide an external view of the USB equipped personality card I saw on FB.

Guess who shared the picture on FB ...? ;)

There is no USB bus shown at the top of the window, but maybe I'd have to populate more of the supporting circuitry to get that to show?
Do you have USB drivers installed? Aren't they not installed by default in classic macOS unless a USB controller exists? Does ioreg in Mac OS X show more info?

I do. I actually tested the donor card out right before starting to move parts, and it was fully working including showing the USB bus in ASP.

Is there any way to get the new (or old) owner to send a hi-res photo of their personality card?

I’ve been working on the card populating various things, but no progress yet in terms of functionality, other than the machine sometimes restarts if I plug in a USB cable.

I selected resistors labelled 103 because that’s what the donor card uses near the USB ports, but I don’t know if those values are right for the Apple card, or how mission critical using the correct value of resistor is for a circuit like this.

Good luck. These buyers/sellers generally want to keep as much secret as possible to increase the "rarity" and "value".
See also: the PenLite. There's a bunch of working prototypes of it around, and not a single archived copy of the disk/OS from one.

I'd love to be proven wrong, however 😁

Not atm, but know it can be done. A long time ago (probably 25yrs or so) I created a hack-a-Mac with a iMac 233 in a slimline PC case after the analog board died. The PSU in the slimline case then died, so it went on a shelf. One day I'll drag it out and get it working again. The pic above is from another '233 that had the analog board die... Don't have any current plans for that one - but it was handy for grabbing a pic. 🙂
