Hi,

I have a set of 3 macintosh based on the 630 form factor case (including an 6200).
- Does they share the same internal architecture (PSU, CD Drive, HD, ...). In other words, can I swap boards across them without care ?
- 1 PSU seems dead I tried the 3 boards and no one starts the computer. Are they easy to recap/rebuild ?
- I have 2 fully working board (chime, display ..) and one more or less defective one.
This board starts the computer with no chime, no display, no disk activity. It seems that's this board receive a PPC601 upgrade (DayStar PowerCard 601 - unknown speed).tempImageFYmTCX.png

tempImageFYmTCX.pngAre these board subject to caps leaking and needs to be recapped ? Or I am missing a boot extension to start the board with that configuration (the dead PSU is from that board) ?

Any idea on how the get this board working again ?

Yes they do. Caps tend to eat vias and sometimes chips, and after that the board is dead.
The LC630 is easy to recap though:

Can you try without the DayStar cache and see whats happen ?

I had a P6205, and when Apple fixed the ROMs on these machines, it disables the cache. I dunno if third-party caches got around that, but I know my computer went from not being so great to being slower than the Quadra I replaced it with.

I have a Performa 630 and a PowerMac 6200 with a dead (not yet repaired) power supply. Swapping ht Boards is no problem at all.

Yes, they use very cheap and frankly not very well designed Astec (I think) power supplies. I believe it's @demik who did a modern ATX replacement inside the original case which brings a lot of benefits but is obviously more work than a straight replacement.

If you're going to intend on keeping the original PSU, I'd recommend replacing the original capacitors as these cause problems with soft power or just result in absolute failure eventually.

The thread is here but the images were lost during the crash:

I will need a mod to edit the original post

It's my understanding that the recall was that the ROM or cache chips was faulty and the recall involved installing a new cache and +8 megs of RAM over the stock configuration.

I'd love to see more on that though because I've never seen info on that. It would be neat to bench one with and without the cache, especially against say a 5300/100 which was cacheless (but did have the boosted 32k L1 cache) and considered a poor performer for it.

Fortunately, they aren't lost, it's on the to-do list to do a gallery import to get images that haven't been moved yet. I don't know the timing on that, however. Wthww's got the bug-tracker and work-log threads in the lounge so those will have the most up-to-date info.

The ROM and cache are a single card on the 6200. The 6200 is basically a 605/630 with a built-in PPC upgrade card. The startup chime is even the same as the upgrade card ROM.

Well, here's an update.

I first start to recap the board with no luck, nothing changed from previous state.
I remove the daystar card and the board still won't start.
I tried to swap the board to a known good 630, it was worse as the computer shut down immediately.
I found a nice video from MAC84 here
"
and found the exactly same problem. One pin was bent and shortcut the next one. I wonder how it can happen as there's a massive heat sink on top of the 601 processor. The card is not the same but the problem was.
I carefully fixed it and the computer starts again. The first start was in 68040 mode and there's a control panel to activate the 601 card. Even the startup chime change.
The old board has 2 problems (one with the board itself, the other one with the upgrade card).
The old board is now recapped and still doesn't chime (it starts but nothing happens) it also start with the adb keyboard start button. Any idea ?
