Quadra 700 vertical feet

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but I noticed there was no openly-available STL model for the Quadra 700 feet, so I made my own based on reference photos, case measurements, and original foot measurements and comparisons. See the Thingiverse description for more details and thoughts.

I think the peak application for these will be a positive for rubber/silicone casting. PLA is very brittle and quite fragile at this scale. I've personally had mixed results with repeated install/removal of them on my own case. It was a factor mainly of filament manufacturer, tbh, but your mileage may vary. PLA I would consider to be "one and done" —don't plan on repeated installs/removals. The tolerances to the case molding is very tight.

 ABS would be a bad idea IMO as the plastics are roughly the same strength, only the case is older, which may result in case damage. Nylon or PETG might be a different story, but I haven't attempted those yet.

The one with the "5" was the last test print, and the 4 others are going to be the first attempt I do at making a mold.

The lighting makes it look like the corner radius is all jacked, but here's a profile view:

That's a slick idea to make a mould and then make rubber castings. Very easy to do that with compounds used to cast modeling subjects, etc.

I'm assuming you're referring to this cross-post from ThinkClassic?  In fact you mentioned that this project was done and gone and to look at the newer 68kMLA member's thread mentioned below. There’s a link to the development thread within that link that does indeed show bbraun’s foot SCAD file there as well.

I did take a look at said SCAD file on the ThinkClassic thread, but a few aspects* that didn't seem to match the referenced OEM feet, nor some nuances of the case which I measured. Not that I begrudge their efforts and contribution. I just wanted to do things my way.

In all fairness, I think bbraun’s feet might do better with repeated installations and removals, based on the points below, if you’re printing PLA or another rigid and brittle material. I wanted a more OEM look to use for eventual negative casting in rubber, so there’s that. I saw a couple of requests for sales/STL files for DIYers in this sale thread, and the seller/user doesn’t appear to be selling/making more at the time I took up the project. Hence my “toe treading” comment. I’m not trying to put someone out of income—there was a request, and I filled it.

I took it upon myself to look at reference photos (with measuring devices in-frame), take measurements of my own case, and ask a few kind members to compare my prototypes to their originals, which they were happy to oblige. Again, I did this because of my own desires.  As far as my workflow: I’m not an engineer. I used a software package that I know well enough to do what I need to do and the working files would not be of use, as it’s not-free program. 

I’m not suggesting that anyone must use my design to be legit—it’s there if it’s wanted. I’m not suggesting it’s absolutely perfect—it’s not. I could tinker with it a good while if I really wanted to, but I don’t. I think my STL is as close to the original without taking a casting of it, and that's all I cared about.

  • The overall thickness of the base of the foot is a tad too thick (4.86mm vs 3mm). This thinner foot allows it to seat flush with the case channels. If others have original feet that didn’t do that, I’d like to see them, because the samples I took (asking owners) showed they seat flush.
  • The vertical portion that seats inside the case is straight rather than tapered (and barbed) like the original. This is a mild aspet, as the hole is 2mm, and the vertical is 1.25 on the SCAD model. I was going for an OEM look.That’s all.
  • The recess in the foot I made to be a tad closer to the actual height of the protrusion on the case. Your mileage may vary.
