Not really 68k Macs, but certainly Vintage!

Apple II Game Server, anyone?

Postby iamdigitalman » 29 Jul 2008, 18:30

I finally got this working!! For anyone who is curious as to what it looks like, I made a video of it on youtube. It's running on my Platinum //e.

Pretty cool, though the video cuts off early. Does the game server allow you to add your own games or is the list fixed?

yeah, I was using the camera on my PSP, and I remember it telling me it ran out of space. If I had a bigger memory card, I would be able to do a longer version.

As for the games, I think they are fixed, which is too bad because I could see this as huge potential for other apps, not just games.

Although, there is a games folder located at a2gameserver_full_2/lib/data/games, but the "images" (or what I assume to be) are in a weird format with no extension, and these files are unusable by my Apple II emulator, Catakig. There is also a games.xml file in the data folder.

Also, in the first iteration of this application, there were only half as many games, 128. I also would like to see this become an open source project, which it is not as of now.

Yeah, the lighting made it tricky to see, next time just put on a desk lamp. Though great video!

That's exactly what I was thinking.

It is now. Blurry has bounced back and forth a bit between Sourceforge and Berlios, but you can get the source here:

The protocol he defines is pretty cool. I think he called it SOS - Serial Operating System. You can specify a hunk of data to transfer to a point in memory, specify a starting address, and transfer control. Very cool.

Ah, sweet. I just also discovered ADTPro, which works a treat on the platinum. It's kinda like the A2GS except you need a disk drive, but I do like the loading of prodos over serial, which would come in handy.

my IIe is getting a real workout now, I thought these machines don't get warm like other computers, being 1mhz and all, but if you use the serial connection a lot, they can get pretty toasty.
