Japanese System Software

Postby heebiejeebies » 28 Nov 2007, 01:09

Buenos días mi pequeño coles,

Kallikak in another thread wrote:You can put System 6 on a PB 140 and PB 170. There was a special Japanese release (6.0.7.1J from memory) that supported them - probably because System 7 in Japanese was delayed? There are instructions on the web about how to cut and paste string resources to work with it in English.

Any more info on this, anyone? Anyone got a link to the instructions or to the Japanese system software?

P.S. Obviously someone in Qatar has been listening to a ‘power of positive thought’ cassette [:D] :

Has to be version 6.0.7.1J for this trick to work. You can get it from http://www1.linkclub.or.jp/%7Ekenfuji/K ... alking.htm and I have archived a description of the process at http://school.anhb.uwa.edu.au/personalp ... ksys6.html

Flash, I'm only really interested for the sake of being able to run System 6 on a PowerBook. But thanks anyway!

Kallikak, thanks, that tutorial will be helpful ! But I presume the downloads I need are the 2 system disks under the heading

KANJI Talking 6.0.7.1 2HD-FD [?]

In which case I'm out of luck because it gives me a 404 !

Try
http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/syslist.html

I am in Japan so will physically look too. I will ask some Japanese Mac users at my uni .

MUGS Japan (Tokyo specifically) is at http://ringo.net/forum
if you wish to ask there too.

Mvallance, domo arigato gozaimasu for your effort! *patronising bow* The version I need isn't on Gamba's page... It may not be necessary for you to ask around if I can get Kallikak's page to work!

Alas, I can't... I think it must be something to do with this computer not rendering Japanese characters properly. I have the 2 font disks but not the system disks themselves. Any chance you can e-mail them to the MSN Messenger address that's in my profile, Kallikak? Purdy please? ;D

I've followed some of the conversations about this trick, and I'm curious... Doesn't anyone have a copy of 6.0.7.1J with the resedit english mods already done? Or is this some right of passage for 140/170 owners? :P

Not good news. I have asked everyone I know here who use Macs and all started with OS 7.1 and above. Tried MUGS Tokyo also but no positive responses there either :-(

Thanks very much for your effort, mvallance. I actually have it now because Kallikak was kind enough to download & e-mail it to me. Oh and equant - you'd think someone would have done that, huh? I'll post it if I can manage to edit it successfully (not going to bother editing it at the moment because I don't actually have a PB140/170 yet).

Heebiejeebies,

Is it a big enough project that we could split it up? Give people different chunks of resource to edit to English? I'm willing to help.

Hi all,

I've run into the same problem — I can only get the two font disks. Would it be possible to post the images to the hotline server? Or, if someone felt like emailing the first two to u3364813 [at] anu.edu.au

I've got a PB 170 all set up (with ResEdit and all) to do some or all of the work required.

By and by, I see that there's an eBay auction for the [reportedly] appropriate developer CD:

I'm more than willing to host the disk images, just need to get them.

Doesn't appear to be too big a project - Ken posted the instructions above. Looks reasonably easy.

By the way, I couldn't get them to load at all anyway - the files unzipped OK but when I made disks from the images most of the files on the disks ended up as garbage instead of working system files.

Heebiejeebies emailed the images to me (thank you again). I'll have a go at following Kallikak's instructions when I get home tonight.
Cheers.

Are you sure it was garbage and not just Kanji being improperly displayed?

On the 2nd disk, some of the icons display properly as suitcases and print drivers and so on, but most show up as blank document icons and refuse to open when double-clicked. On the first disk, they all show up as blanks! And my SE/30 won't start up from it, (though I'm not sure if it's supposed to anyway).
