Quadra 630

Just think, having a Quadra 950 in 1992 would be like having a Mac Pro today… except with more slots, more expandability, and on-board SCSI!

Should I get this Quadra?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Apple-Quadra-630-w-printer-keyboard-and-mouse_W0QQitemZ170148195615QQihZ007QQcategoryZ51046QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I want it, it looks nice, I like the look of the case.

What can it do?

I noticed in Everymac.com that the ram can only go up to 36Mb!

I need a mac with video in.

It depends on what its got. From the looks of it it doesn't have much.

These are nice to have bundled with it because they can be difficult to find, or expensive to purchase as add-ons later on.

Cool stuff to have in a Quadra 630 are (in some order of importance):

1) CommSlot Ethernet Card (that Q630 looks like it may have it, or it could have an internal modem, which is likely Apple's Express Crap).
2) Audio Video Board (looks like it doesn't have it)
3) TV Tuner (looks like it doesn't have it)

Less important, but cool to have too:

4) Quadra 630 MPEG Board
5) DOS Card for Quadra 630
6) Power PC Upgrade Card (not essential, but cool)

If you have 5 and 6 you'll have a computer with THREE Processors, that can run 68K Mac, PPC Mac, and Windows (???).

What's cool about it:
33Mhz Full 040 (if it is a Quadra 630, not an LC/Performa 630)
Supports up to 120GB IDE Hard Drive
Supports up to 68MB RAM (64+4). Some versions have two SIMM slots for 132MB of RAM.

For a quid it looks good, but 9 quid postage? I'd get it if I could PICK IT UP without paying postage.

That's all good cheers.

I can pick it up! :)

We'll see

I have a tv card in my 6300, could I swap that out?

Even if I could, I havn't managed to get the 6300 to show any tv anyway.

I'm really looking for somthing to get video in...

Ayup, you certainly can use the AV and TV cards from your Performa. Keep in mind that if you do move the TV card from the 6300 to the 630, you'll also need the AV card. The AV card is the one with the 3 RCA jacks and the S-Video jack.

Will this card; http://www.vume.com/photos/view/71710/

fit into the Quadra 630?

It is the video card from the 6500

What's the ribbon cable for? I have a card just like that from a 5200/6200, and the ribbon cable on it is about half the size. (half as many pins.) I have no idea what the ribbon cable slot on this card is for either.

It'd be for an Apple MPEG card.

wow, by looking at that picture of the Apple StyleWriter 1200 with the door open in that auction, it reminds me allot of my Canon BJC-250 with its door open. almost looks the same

IIRC the cartridges, (Canon BC-05), from these printers are compatible.

I would get the Quadra if the price stays fairly low, if I were you. You could have alot of fun with that and there are alot of upgrade possibilities.

A lot of Apple Printers were just rebadged Canons. Maybe that's why they look so similar. ;)

I have two Stylewriters right now, this one would make that 3!

But the Stylewriter has been a good printer, I can get the cartridges with discount!

But alas the price for the Quadra 630 has risen above my bidding range, sniff [:(]

Maybe next time.

Really I just need a cheap but good 68k mac to network with my 650.

I would suggest another Quadra 650 or a Quadra 605 with an Ethernet card.

I would go with a 650 if you want a desktop form factor or a 950 if you want a tower. The 840AV is faster and has the DSP, but is also more in demand than the 950, so they usually sell for a lot more. Failing one of those two, then the 700, 800 and 900 would be my next choices. I don't like the expansion options on the pizza boxes or even the 630 style cases even though my second most used Quadra at the moment is a Performa 631 with a real 040 installed. I prefer lots of Nubus slots in Quadras.
