Macintosh Classic at hamvention

picked up a macintosh classic at the hamvention today. Has a ram card, its HDD, etc...

Guess what. I got VERY lucky because it has the Maxell red battery. but it hasnt leaked yet! pulled and tossed for good.

There was a perfect condition LC575 setting there as well. I contriplated on getting it, and decided against it because I really dont have the room. I want it, but i cant.

He has a couple Kaypros with boxes of software, and has some Apple IIe units, and a PPC 6100 with DOS card, Still there. I got in today because I had a dealer pass. the actual vending starts tomorrow.

there was a quicksilver G4, MDD G4, and a few powermac G5s. some DP, some not. and a couple parts ibooks. one 12", one 14"

My brother is there and made connection with a former Apple tech. He said he had a Techstep he wanted to get rid of. Does anyone have one? Is it actually still useful in troubleshooting?

Yeah, he was at a vendor booth but I forget which one. He would have had some SDR stuff running on Mac OS X and iPad.

Not sure what is better here...the Classic or the fact you got a non-leaky Maxell! They seem harder to find than Lisa 1s!!!

Is it me, or have there been a lot of Classics liberated recently?

Ya, I ran into him. But since I didnt know who he was, we never made a connection. I wore the hillbilly fest shirt if he remembers it.

Well, the battery upon closer inspection was just starting to leak. No evidence on the board, but you can see wet spots inside the wrapper toward the top of the battery. There were a couple classics there last year, but I never messed with it. I decided to grab one this year because all the other ones that were obtained, and a few months ago cruising ebay they were pretty high for awhile. They seemed to have fallen though.

serious question though...
is there something wrong with us, that we like to collect these old mac's?

No . . .

a) it's fun and a learning experience . . .
b) it probably costs most of us less in a year than greens fees for the summer . . . much less the collection of crap that goes along with that game . . .
c) compare the cost of collecting for a year to one ski weekend . . . or the collection of crap that goes along with that activity . . .
d) compare the time spent to here and playing with our toys to watching the dreck on TV . . .

e) anybody got a bass boat and the collection of crap that goes along with that activity?

f) a ski tow boat and the coll . . .

I rest my case!

I used to sell marine parts. Boat=Bust Out Another Thousand. That's just talking about the parts, even the yearly maintenance stuff. Then there's the cost of fuel. Before I worked there I wanted a boat. Now I'm just glad my Dad has one I can go out on with him on a few weekends per summer.

Skiing I like doing on the cheap. Passes are free if you work for the mountain. My skis are like 8 years old...I don't go blowing four figures on the latest and greatest every year. Let me tell you, getting paid to ski and drive snowmobiles was awesome. Except for the pay... But what it lacked in dollars it made up for in job satisfaction. Now I know plenty of people who have day pass vouchers to give out!

There was a guy in LA County who was or might still be restoring some 1920s racing yacht. Major structural damage. The catch?

He was doing it in his yard, right in the suburb. A judge ordered it removed. The gent says it gives him satisfaction. I could probably agree...but at what cost?

What about jetskis? Or are those Bust Out Another Tithe?

Too lazy to use bold. I just made that one up. That's all I could think of as far as some sort of thing about jetskis costing money. Who's got a better one?

I've never touched one or looked up costs on them or their parts though. Then again if you really want an expensive hobby, own an airplane. Aviation parts make marine parts look like chump change. Not that I own a plane, or ever have or will. But some guy I talked to when selling marine parts apparently did own one, and gave me some examples to Google. Ouch.

I always thought those mechanical push mowers were cool. we used to have one long ago. With the price of gas these days, why not?

There are actually people who collect traffic lights, too.

I have one I bought from my municipality; my intent is to use it in a classroom as a behavior modification system. I bought a controller board for it and probably will swap the incandescent bulbs for LEDs.

When I did some research on it, I found people who have 20+ lights (practically whole intersections). Some of these guys are also into road signs.

Then there's the guy who collects Texas Instruments calculators. I found the page when I was looking up a calculator I was planning to use with a student.

Personally, I collect Pittsburgh Pirates bobbleheads. I usually only display the guys currently on the team; the rest are in my closet. (As I type this, I'm being watched by Joel Hanrahan, Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker, and Nate McLouth). I also collect coins (which is a family hobby; I'm a fourth-generation collector) and baseball cards (third-generation collector).

In Primary School there was a traffic light on the wall of the cafeteria. If we started to get loud it would go to yellow...really loud and well I think you can guess. Clowns rode out on unicycles and shot us with paintball guns. OK it just turned red. The clown thing sounded way more interesting.

Not sure if it was some noise sensor, or just someone with a remote or button of some sort, but I still think it was a good idea. Unicycle clown paintball patrol is better idea though.

I collect Macs and old telephones and related equipment. Also in college I used to collect parking tickets due to a total disregard for campus parking policies.

Actually, noise is exactly what I plan to use mine for!

I found a remote control traffic light kit and may eventually buy one for this particular signal. There's an old light that flashes in the youth center where I run Macs4Kids each month so I may ask to look at that one for the purposes of wiring and mounting. If something goes wrong, no need to fear--I bought two signals so I would have a spare/backup. Hopefully I don't need to use that; would make a mighty fine rec room decoration.

My proposal for the light:

Green: The students may talk, work cooperatively, etc.
Yellow: It's time to wrap up. Time to stop talking and get quiet for the red light.
Red: All talking must stop. All eyes must be on me, directions will be given.

I plan on using this for a number of things--morning arrival, indoor recess, centers, cooperative learning experiences during lessons, etc.

If I really wanted to get creative for centers, I could get one of those green arrow segments and put it on my signal for center rotation!

You know, thats actually a neat idea. Never thought of that, but of course I am not an educator either.

You use red (wich is usually means negative, no, stop) to enforce something that you want the kids to view as positive, yes, go. Sounds wrong to me.

I would connect it to a microphone and let it go red when the microphone picks up a lot of noise and green when there is no noise. If the lights are big enough you coud paint a smiling face on the green light and a frowning face on the red one. I'm not sure what to do with the orange one.
