Today, I scored these:

iMac G4
NuPower G3 500mhz Beige upgrade in the original box.
Powerbook 280 complete.
I picked up the LC575 as it was still sitting there, and the price was $5. He wanted to throw in the mac plus and 5500/250 machine for free just to get rid of them. I really really dont have the room so I passed. The kaypros were gone. also the G5s were gone.

They also had a more recent MacBook Pro for sale, $300 bucks but I didnt have the money. I passed.

Probably going to decide what to do and maybe list for resell.

Your LC575 is probably in better shape then mine, I still wouldn't sell mine, now that i'v finally got one...
even if someone offered me 200, I still would have to strongly think about it,

is tough when you need a part, and you don't have one,
then you get some stuff, and just wanna horde,
Because you know sometimes getting parts is difficult or expensive or BOTH!

For me the real danger is a covetousness and greed issue. It's like my kids with candy (or me for that matter ).
I've got a bunch of great stuff already, but "the eyes of man are never satisfied."

I think collecting is a great hobby. Educational for me and my kids. Family bonding. Emotionally satisfying. Little bargain hunting. Little wheeler dealing. Little electronics tinkering. LIttle cleaning and displaying. It has lots of great aspects.

But when I find myself trawling eBay or craigslist for the umpteenth time for something I just bought two of, I have to ask myself where healthy collecting ends and obsession begins.

I can't eat everything at the buffet. I just can't. If I'm the only thing standing between that last brownie and the trash can, it belongs in the trash can.
The same has to be said of great vintage Macs. I can't rescue everything. If I'm the only person standing between great vintage Mac X and the trash, it just might belong in the trash.

the keyboard in this duo280 is unusable. Its hard to push keys, but you have to slam the keys to get them to respond.

the LC575 needs a complete rebuild. not sure what I am going to do yet with this one. it tries to fire up and the monitor flips out and goes crazy. sometimes it chimes and starts up, sometimes itll come to a gray screen with a happy mac and the monitor starts jumping and blipping, bong bong bong then sometimes nothing. Its funny when the monitor freaks out because youll see deflection sweep lines ultrabright, and come to a quick dot across the CRT when it shuts off.

After it had a fit, it started to go stable and show me a picture with welcome to macintosh. Just when I thought it might have been ok, it sat there for a minute or two, and it just shut off with the white dot of death sweep across the screen and letting out the magic smoke from somewhere with a room full of stench. Now its dead. Got to find out what sort of electronic gremlins got in there, and fried it.

The logic board looked ok, only thing I can assume is the analog board went violently. Oh well. maybe the logicboard will work in the CC.

Question ... before you fired it up... did you take it to the garage fire up the air compressor and blast out the monitor and fan areas real good?

i can't tell you how many computers i "FIXED" just by blasting out the filth!
in your case it sound like a cap blew...

i had an apple IIe once, i had just gotten it in from ebay, fired it up, I'm using it, and smoke starts pouring out of it, tons of smoke!
it's still working buy the way haha, so i quickly unplug it, opened up the psu to find some large rectangular object split open spitting what looks like oil all over... not sure if it was a cap, or oil filled resister... but it was nasty!

If you part it out, or ever consider doing so, I may be interested in the front bezel thing (the thing that covers the floppy and CD-ROM drives) and the back logic board cover thing (sorry, I don't know what else to call them). Mine have broken tabs, and while they work and look OK and stay in place for the most part, I'd like something that isn't broken, if for nothing else but to increase the cosmetic value a bit (it's obvious where the tabs are broken, and I tend to be perfectionistic in this regard).

If not, well, forget I ever said anything.

Perhaps the front one is intact (it's the one with the name badge on it; I think you know what I'm talking about).

I don't care really, I was just curious. As my first 68k Macintosh, I've grown particularly attached to it (despite its odd looking case).

If you decide to keep it intact, I hope you get it working.

I ripped apart the machine, the flyback failed. I see carbon tracks underneath the flyback. The solder joints look good, the HOT (Horizontal Output Transistor) is also shorted as well, which is why it wont power up. If i listen carefully, you can hear the SMPS ticking.

I have an old color classic analog board for parts (HSTAT didnt work), and the flybacks may interchange. heavens only knows what else might have died in the massacre. Only one way to find out.

P.S, I have a front faceplate but its only for an LC550 and it has no optical drive slot.

Removed the flyback and it was shot. Turns out the CC flyback has the same pinouts.

So i cleaned the board, replaced the flyback, HOT, a diode in the damper circuit. She came to life!
