PowerBook 1400cs for $33.30 shipped . . .

Postby Trash80toHP_Mini » 14 Mar 2012, 03:01

. . . somebody else tried to snipe this one too, but I got it!

A 16MB 117MHz 'cs is really not all that much to write home about . . .
. . . .but it does have a clear lid (I only have the one on Beater) and no stress cracks on back section of the lid from hinge fatigue . . .
. . . I "needed" both . . . kinda . . . sorta . . .
. . . but I think I might just spy a Video Card? :approve:

If so, that'll be a first for me and that sucker will be heading straight into the LCIII/G3™ hack. [:D]

Someone's making out like a bandit on eBay! I don't know which deal is sweeter, this or the 150. I think this one...the 1400 is a neat PowerBook. I should dig mine out.

If that's a functional video card peeking out the back, under the good @$$flap, this will have been, by far, the second best deal I've ever done on eBay. [:D]

I'll never again see the likes of the Paladin Keyboard and PEx MoBo I got for the Benjamin I laid down as the opening bid for the Big@$$BoxLot™ . . .
. . . that deal was EPIC! The Paladin KBD was the kicker Cinemo and I spotted in those pics and that alone was worth the $100 investment. :approve:

I'm going to stop looking at eBay for a while again and concentrate on finishing up a few loose ends on deals I have in the works. After that I'll have to wait for the toy budget to recover.

Yup, looks like video out to me. Well done. Even if it's the 8-bit card (which it probably is), it's still a nice nab, and if it's the 16-bit card, please send me a PM. ;)

I'll never get rid of my 1400, and with the G3, video out, bigger HD and full stack of RAM, it's pretty pimped. I just need the solar cover ... 8-)

 If it's a 16bit VidCard in there, first I'll change my shorts . . .
. . . and then it'll go into Beater™ . . .
. . . my maxed out & Sonnetized 1400c (sans video out) first ever WiFi WarDriver!

That'll keep it safe until I'm ready for a second monitor for the LCIII/G3 hack.

Unfortunately it also looks like the Apple video card, rather than the NewerTech one, which means 8 bit colour. Either way, still a handy thing to have.

I thought the NewerTech had the same connector (so you can't tell). Or is it different externally somehow?

Any 1400 VidCard will make the NewerTech BookEndz Dock a LOT more useful.
I Missed this bit when I bought the Dock earlier in the day:
You must have the outboard video option on your PowerBook 1400 to be able to use this Dock

You've just gotta LOVE those Mac DA-19 pigtails and the DB-25 SCSI port. it puts a well heeled 1400 about a foot closer to the wall than those $*&s+*^*&%^ PowerBook peripheral cables from Apple!
I'll bet it would work just fine if you pulled the access port plug off the unimplemented Video slot though! }:)

I picked up the 1400cs/16/CDVideo Card AND the BookEndz Dock at the Rental Office . . .

Everything tested so far works! [:D]

But I knew it was likely going to be a PITA when I saw the Groton Public Schools PropSticker on the bottom . . .
. . . it is . . . still locked up tighter than a drum, so I'm guessing it's the Stock 8 bit VidCard . . .
. . . but the locked up HDD is only about a 800MB, so that's going to be going bye-bye ASAP!

Luckily, it's set up in extended desktop mode and I'm LOVING the BookEndz DA-19 Pigtail! This docked 1400 probably sits just about as close to the wall as if it were un-docked and inflicted with Apple's ( DUMB@$$ Design Award Winning) Laptop Video Out Adapter Cable.
Me likes NewerTech's Desigh Ethos! :approve:

Well . . . the locked-up HDD has developed a very interesting click/clack/bonk of death! }:)

I'm sitting here listening to its death song, every once in a while it sounds like it's accessing on all cylinders and then it groans and goes back to . . .

Cool! it just dropped dead and took the 1400 down with it . . .

< pushes power button >

OK, it starts back up . . . death sounds starting up, but now it's making noises like it's booting up while the Floppy Icon is still flashin' the ??????????

8-) it's definitely deader-n-a-doornail, no matter how many moans and groans it puts out. I'm tired of listening to the death rattle so I'm not pushing the power button again.

Anybody feel like predicting which brand of HDD just died before I rip it outta' this 'Book? :o)

IBM. I was originally thinking Conner, but I don't think they were still in business when the 1400 came out.

Another vote for IBM. I have had 2 of these 1400's and they both had IBM drives.
