What's this, some sort of USB-based docking expansion base for an x86 tablet (the only place you will have any luck whatsoever with an optical drive) like the Acer W500?

Without knowing what you were aiming for, it's hard not to go "well, he has successfully put a bunch of random crap on top of some Duo plastics."

It definitely reminds me vaguely of IBM/Lenovo's X series media bases.

Bingo!

The empty cubic would contain the MicroController necessary for converting the Duo KBD Switch Matrix Signals, the TrackBalls X,Y data and click output to USB.

which is easy to do as far as the microcontroller goes. ive written keyscanning algos before.

Heck if you had a dead Duo 210 or 230 black and white version, you could "possibly" fit an iPad or some other tablet inside the LCD housing, as a "slide in" type mechanism with a base docking connector on the other end that the tablet slides into.

Then the bottom half of the laptop contains an extended battery to keep the tablet charged, and the USB microcontroller that uses the mouse and keyboard.

That just may work, and is not hard to implement. You would need a USB AVR or a USB PIC type of microcontroller, and implement the HID stack. Heck there may even be example codes out there that does just this, and the reason i feel so is becuase of the MAME movement and custom interfaces for that.

Android tablets will not accomodate an optical drive, and most of them will already achieve a full day of battery life. However, an extended battery pack (or possibly a spot to mount an SSD for one of the ones with a USB host port) is never a bad thing.

If somebody were buying a new Android tablet, however, and storage space were critical to them, it would impress me if they didn't know about this tablet that has a 250gb spinning hard disk in it.

Accessories like this have been being built pretty specifically for the iPhone/iPad/iPod-Touch for a while now, but this version seems to just be a box with USB ports on it. Users of iOS devices must be completely uninterested in adding functionality or battery life to their devices.

Of course, those still leave it upon you to have a wallet that's not built into a gadget.

iPad is CLEARLY the best 'Pad on the market to date, but it could definitely use a bit more in the I/O connector department, I'm not a BlueTooth fan.
