Problem with old application, too much memory?

Postby Whitesnake » 30 Nov 2011, 03:49

I'm currently trying to run an old piece of awkward software from 1986 and it just won't run if there is more than 19mb System Ram.
I tested this under emulation using Basilisk II.

Right now I'm using a PowerBook 190cs and it has 40mb of Ram and when I run the application it just crashes.
I tried installing earlier versions of System 7 to see if it would give me the option to turn off 32-bit Addressing
but the option was not there. I guess the hardware doesn't support it.

My question is are there any solutions for limiting system ram? or compatibility applications that can remedy this problem?

Thanks.

Perhaps try system 6 on an older Mac? Or, pull the RAM in your Powerbook to get 8MB :p

It might have to run in 24 bit mode, if thats the case you'll have to try an older Mac, preferably 1993 and before. The PowerBook 190 (along with the LC630) can't have 32 bit mode disabled.

I hardly dare to ask the obvious: Did you try MiniVMac for running your app?

I found MiniVMac and FusionPC best for running the very old stuff, if you dont have a suitable vintage Mac.
FusionPC will need to be hosted in DOSBox,(or in WIN98 or lower on real hardware).
As far as I know there is no DOSBox for Classic MacOS, but other solutions may be floating around.

The application is for a Sampler/Synthesizer so I need to run it on real hardware. :)

gday whitey, sounds like u will need sys 6 for that app. And u might even find , as its a really early app, it _may_ only like running on a 68000 might i suggest a mac plus or, if you can wait, the mac in an fpga project.
