Looking for Apple Network Software Installers prior to 1.4.4

Postby ojfd » 20 Nov 2011, 06:59

Does anyone of you have somwhere in your archives older versions of Apple's "Network Software Installers"?
Apple has only versions 1.4.4 and up on their servers (and numerous mirrors), but I am looking for complete installers of:
1.4
1.4.1
1.4.2
1.4.3

There are some older NSI's around that were included in various "AppleShare" installs, but they are incomplete and have some driver resources removed :-(
They're also called differently, namely, Network Software Installer ZM-1.3,... ZM-1.4 etc.
I'm doing a bit of a research on FDDI implementation and would like to check older NSI versions. Any help will be very much appreciated!

Cheers,
ojfd

Thanks 24bit, but do you have them separately as Stuffit archives of Disk Copy images and if so, can you verify that they're not damaged? I've found similar files on some ftp server and they had their Resource forks chopped off :(
Besides, that d/l is 502 MB multipart rar archive. Stuffit can't do that.

Thanks to all who have responded and provided links so far!

"classic", those, in the link you've provided, have no Resource forks! They're hosted "naked" on some Win or other machine.

Report.
To summarize - One down, several to go. From the files i've got:

* 1.4.3 version is real, but has no FDDI driver components anymore.
* 1.4.2 is crippled - it's ZM-1.4.2
* 1.4 same as above - it's ZM-1.4
Here's what I'm talking about. Upper one is from the DaynaPort EtherTalk installer "Network Resources' file v. 1.3, lower one is from Cabletron FDDITalk installer "Network Resources" file v. 1.4.1 Both files are (c)Apple Computer, btw.

And here's what I'm really after - extensions "FDDITalk Phase 2".!
I have "clean" 1.0.3 version from that Cabletron installer and was able to find patched 1.0 version. Note that both are by Apple, so I would like to trace down "clean" copies of 1.0 and 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 if later two ever existed.

By the way, those of you wishing to play around with FDDI optical networks on NuBus Macs, check this address:
http://tinyurl.com/7d8lezf
They still have some Cabletron F6069 cards + daughtercards listed.
The base card is
Cabletron Nubus MMF FDDI Interface Card F6069 • SKU: 715001397-11
the other one is daughtercard that adds second optical port
Cabletron Nubus MMF DAS FDDI Interface Card F6069-DAS • SKU: 715001398-11

Picture of the base card is in my post
http://68kmla.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=17198

Here's one interesting article from the past that mentions FDDI on Macs:
http://www.opus1.com/www/jms/mw-fastlane.html

And if you wish to connect it to PCI Mac, here's my post about another great FDDI card that works on a Mac (Feb. 2010):

Wow, protocol7, wow!
That's very useful and very interesting. Thank you!
Now, the 1.0.4 version of FDDITalk Phase 2 pops up.. and Network Resources file v.1.4.4 with FDDI driver in it.

Guys, if you have spare time, please, check your archives :)

I should correct what I said before about ZM versions of NSI's - according to Apple's Read Me files ZM indicates multi-country - just found it out. RT*M, as they say.
So, it looks that FDDI driver components weren't included in regular Network Software Installers but were provided to developers (?) on NSI Licensing Disks or something like that.

Glad that worked out. I had a look through the 3DO SDK disks too (as the dev machines were connected to nubus Macs over a FDDI connection) but didn't see anything useful. There's a driver for the nubus board but I couldn't see any FDDI-related resources in it.

Update:

Actually it would probably help if I had a drvr template for ResEdit. As you have one, maybe there is something of use in the 3DO driver. Here's one:

Yep, mainly developer CDs. I have a few versions of the 3DO SDK so if that driver is of any use I could probably dig out some more.

I've spent last two days researching on subject of Apple's Network Software Installers and their release dates by looking at various Network Resources (ResEdit file) creation dates. This is what I was able to find out so far:

1.2 - 17. Mar '92
1.3 - 22. Nov '92
1.3.2 - 3. Jun '93
1.3.3 - 22. Jun '93
1.4 - 23. Aug '93
1.4.1 - 30. Sep '93
1.4.2 - 24. Jan '94
1.4.3 - 22. Feb '94
1.4.4 - 24. Mar '94

Regarding my search for NSI's with FDDI components included, this is what I have at the moment:

1. 'clean' Network Resources 1.3 file dated 22. Nov 92 (source - DaynaPort Ethernet installer)
+ modified FDDITalk Phase 2 - v.1.0 creation date 18. Dec 92. (source unknown)

2. 'clean' Network Resources 1.4.1 file dated 30. Sep 93 (source - Cabletron FDDI installer)
+ 'clean" FDDITalk Phase 2 - v.1.0.3 creation date 30. Sep 93. (source - Cabletron FDDI installer)

3. 'clean' Network Resources 1.4.4 file dated 24. Mar 94 (source - some Apple Developer CD)
+ 'clean" FDDITalk Phase 2 - v.1.0.4 creation date 24. Mar 94 (source - some Apple Developer CD)
These last two thanks to protocol7

Oldest traces of FDDI so far are in MPW SampleCode file CheckFDDI.a, creation date14. Dec '91

I was able to find out that NSI 1.4 was included in Apple Developer CD November 1993 and spent almost 5 Hours d/l it from one particular place. Much to my frustration, it turned out that it had 'regular' NSI 1.4 included, with no FDDI components at all xx(
Would anyone of you with Developer CDs collection, be so kind and check them for anything related to FDDI and Network Software? It will be highly appreciated! :-) Ideal time span would be between November 1991 and December 1994.

TIA,
ojfd

I´ll look through the October´93 disk, whether theres any FDDI stuff on it.
For the old volumes from 1991, which one would you regard as promising - anything from 1 to 6 or 8?

Sherlock comes up with nothing for FDDI on the Oct93 disk.
There is of course network stuff like this - useless for you I presume.

Yes, pretty much so, but thanks, "24 bit", I appreciate it!
If there isn't anything called "FDDITalk" or similar on this particular DevCd, then October '93 could be removed from the checklist, together with November '93 that I checked myself.
As to the 1991 disks, it's better to start with Volume #8. That one should be from August / September, I guess.

Nothing on these for FDDI unfortunately, as far as I could see.
One disk comes with a corrupted NSI 1.4.3, guess its the one you already got.

Thanks, 24bit.
Can Sherlock actually look inside img files? If there's a floppy image inside that CD image, can Sherlock see contents of these as well?
What results it returns, when you search for AppleTalk Files, AppleTalk, Network Resources, NSI or Network Software Installer?

Another lead - what are Apple's E.T.O (Essential Tools & Objects) CDs? I've never heard of them before.
Google search turned up this info:
E.T.O. is a CD-ROM-based quarterly subscription to Apple’s software development tools for the professional Macintosh programmer. It contains the most up-to-date versions of Apple’s development tools, as well as selected preliminary versions of future releases.
another source
E.T.O., a CD-based subscription product, has been updated regularly since its initial release in 1990 and
includes tools that software developers can use to create, debug, and test high-performance Macintosh software.

Anyone have any of these from 1991 - 1994? Maybe FDDI stuff I'm looking for was on those CDs?

As before, thanks to all who responded so far!

Can Sherlock actually look inside img files?

No, I better should have made clear. I mounted the img/toast thingies in SheepShaver, let Sherlock look and took a glance at the Hypercard stacks describing the inventory. Thats why I´m pretty sure there is nothing up for you regarding this thread. There are many other interesting files, e.g System5, localized System6 installers including Faroer? or Apple´s CD ROM driver setup disks, but thats another story.
