[PC, but close enough anyways] Random IDE HD failure

Postby IPalindromeI » 18 Oct 2011, 19:33

This could be my first HD failure. I have several CD drive corpses, but not HDs...

Anyways, playing SimCity 2000 on my Linux-Windows dualboot, and I hear a large whirr, like a floppy's but louder. I bend down to the floppy drive and it stops. Save my SC2000 game, BSoD, can't read Drive C:.

Hard reset because there's no way Windows wants to shut down, and the BIOS couldn't boot from the IDE drive...

The HD, in specific is a 10 GB Quantum Fireball lct10.
Ask me about Linux and virtualization.
Interesting stuff (including PDAs, laptops, etc):Nokia N800, HP TouchPad, other misc PDAs, 2x ThinkPad 701CS

sounds like the berrings seized, and thats the absolute worse case scenario, becuase if its a multi-platter drive, you have to have a special tool to remove the platters to put them inside a good drive to get your data back.

It sounded more like a clunk, but it did it multiple times...

I've ripped out the drives after trying to wrangle with removing the sleigh, screws. and cables. Gonna need a new HD :/
