color classic wont boot (hdd ok)

rrr my hard drive wont boot if i remove the hdd and put it in my classic II (b/w) it boots fine....
dose the scsi chip give probs?? or the connectors???

A common problem with Color Classics, especially if the drives have been used in other machines, is the lack of the proper system version or enabler.

Color Classics require 7.1 (not 7.0.1) or later to boot. If you're using Apple's free system downloads, only 7.5.3 will run on the Color Classic.

If you have System 7.1 (not free, came bundled with every CC sold) you will need System Enabler 401. If the only 7.1 you have is the retail version, you will need to install the enabler separately. Put it on your Install 1 disk (and your Disk Tools disk in case of an emergency). The enabler is available for free from Apple's website.

Of course, hardware could also be the issue. Do you have another SCSI hard drive to test with? Try putting a different drive in the CC to rule out SCSI controller problems.

i'v replace the scsi chip and still no better if i boot the computer with "Network Access Disk 7.5.sea" theres still no hdd on the desktop
i also try my lc si mac hdd os7.5.x still no hdd the scsi bus is not there

Any chance this is a Scsi Termination issue?

Sometimes the termination 5v or whatever it was is screwed, or the diode that sits near the resistor pack on drives equipped with them on the end chain, or the resistor pack itself can go bad and look like this as well.

I had to resort to external active termination once to fix a similar issue years ago.

I found a color classic on new zealands ebay trademe.co.nz
it would not boot..
so when it came i looked inside bad caps.
replace the caps and booted it up and !!
downloaded a boot disk and up it came ( ok hdd bad?? )
put the hdd in my classic II to see whats on the hdd and it booted the CC hdd (oooh the hdd is not bad )
ok i have some Q's
1 can a dead pram battery(3.6v) stop the hdd from working
2 Network Access Disk image. dose it see hdd's

Possibly but you should have tested that right off the bat before you replaced the caps. Why ask it is surely to be old.

I would not think the Network Access Disk would have the necessary drivers to see the disk. Why not get a normal version of System 7 and the proper drivers, all of which are available all around the net. Also, try hooking the drive up to the external SCSI connector. Since you say it works on the Classic, use the same disk you are trying to use on the CC in the Classic. It should work. If the Network disk does not see it on the Classic, but the Classic otherwise sees it plugged in externally, then you have your answer.

If I understood your terse sequence of events there, you installed your hard drive from your Classic II into your Color Classic and then the Color Classic booted from its internal hard drive, where it had refused before? Is that correct?

If that is correct, I would guess that your original hard drive's jumpers were configured improperly, probably in the termination department. Improperly configured SCSI bus can cause the machine to hang at the gray screen or prevent a hard drive from being recognized. The second hard drive probably has termination set on it and that fixed (for loose values of "fix") your SCSI problem enough to boot from the internal hard drive.

Let us know if my description above fits your facts and if it does then we can go from there on advice for setting the jumpers (or resistor packs) on your Color Classic's internal drive.

I've had a similar problem with my color classic: I removed the logic board and blew out the dust with canned air and when I put everything back together the color classic wouldn't boot.

After trying pretty much everything (new pram battery, new HD, various boot disks) I finally tried using a 25 pin SCSI active terminator.

After I installed the SCSI terminator and fired it back up, it booted into System 7 without a hitch!

I don't know why all of a sudden I now need to terminate my CC, but I am certain that it solved my problem.

The part was $12 on Amazon.

Other way round - HD boots fine in another machine.

Try removing the battery and booting without it. If that doesn't work, leave the Mac plugged in and running (ie, trying to boot) for a few minutes, then try quickly flicking it off and on again. You can sometimes get enough charge stored in the system to boot it that way if you're fast. If that fails, try leaving it running for say an hour, and try it again.
