Capacitor fell off of an LC III?

Postby Mike Richardson » 10 Aug 2007, 03:50

I have an LC III. One of the capacitors looks like it fell off, solder pads and all, but as far as I can tell, the missing capacitor has no ill effects on the system. Sound works fine, ADB works, everything seems to work OK. Is it OK to just leave it off?

Got a pic? :O I've never even HEARD of this before! If everything works ok, then i'd leave it *exactly* as is. but get a pic.

on my old (now dead) 8500 board was a cap that came off on one side. the board worked well the way it was.

What location on the board did it come from? If it's near the LC-PDS slot then it might be something to do with that -- and hence if you're not using a card then you wouldn't notice.

Yes it is near the PDS slot. It is probably related to it somehow. Would trying a PDS card damage the card at this point?

It's hard to say without knowing what the capacitor does exactly. I wouldn't risk it personally, unless you don't mind the chance that it will get trashed.

Almost all of the electrolytics are power supply bypasses. There is an abundance of them, so one or two lost here and there won't cause any problems, assuming that the remaining ones are in good health (this may not be a good assumption with our old machines, however).

If all is working now, be happy. Just carefully note what and where it used to be, so that you know what to do in the future, should the need arise.

A few capacitors are also audio related; generally they are near the audio port. But the audio is fine.

Yes, I took note of what you said in your original post. Since you already said that you had no sound or other problems, the likelihood of the fallen cap being an ordinary bypass cap was made very high.

Or you might have an ugly inaudible gremlin to deal with like a DC offset or ultrasonic oscillation.

This topic is really old. I think I stopped using the board.
