Zip drives

Postby sirwiggum » 08 Apr 2012, 14:52

I have found an old Parallel Port Zip drive.

I have read somewhere that these used to actually be SCSI but with a parallel converter.

Could it be used as an external drive with the Mac Classic 2? (and potentially the plus if the monitor gets going some day)?

If so, what lead would I need? Would a standard parallel port lead work (I can't find one to test this).

I have an old mac formatted zip disk from my old beige G3, would I be able to use this again?

Thanks!

They're SCSI on the inside, so you'll probably need to open it up and un-adapt it in order to access it from a Mac.

My "Old Guard" 'fritter buddy, jruschme, sent me a Combo SCSI/Parallel ZIP Drive/Compact AC Adapter in a really nice case. I think this bodes well for your SCSI Conversion Project.

For the sake of research, I'll assume that yours has the Parallel Adapter with a spot for a second DB-25 connector and the termination/SCSI ID switches blocked off? If so, you're in great shape for turning your find into a SCSI/Parallel model or even doing away with the Parallel Adapter entirely to do a Daisy-Chainable SCSI Device makeover.

All that said, your best bet of all would likely be to offer your somewhat more rare (?) Parallel ZIP Drive as an even trade for the SCSI version in the Trading Post!

thanks trash80tohpmini, it is parallel with a passthrougn for a printer.
While it is based on scsi, it is missing a scsi chip.

it isn't a plus which can switch between parallel and scsi.

would be willing to swap for a acai, or I might source a separate scsi, run parallel via hfvexplorer then swap disks with the scsi attached to one of the compacts.

thanks.

Sounds like a plan, I need to see if the parallel port on the Plus will work through the NuBus Parallel Port Card I got in one of the several Card Lots I've acquired in the last year or so. [:)]
