Clean/Prep depopulated board for repopulating?

Postby Trash80toHP_Mini » 17 Sep 2011, 05:04

I've heard mention here and there of the process of prepping a rework PCB after SolderSucking a/o De-solder Braiding of pads and thru-holes to remove components for replacement, but I can't remember seeing a definitive treatment process that includes a materials list & order of application to prep the board for making a really good solder connection.

Does anyone have a link to a good HowTo? Is this something that ought to be, or already is in our WiKi . . .
. . . which I've never had a chance to look at so far.

The stuff I've done in the past has worked for the most part, but it'd be nice to have the definitive S.O.P. on the books here for the process.

Sorry if this is elemental stuff to be asking. I spend a considerable amount of time researching all kinds of crap for the gang here, so I don't feel particularly silly or selfish asking for help on something like this from comrades with real world experience . . .
. . . instead of spending time SEARCHING for it on my own. ;)

Ok, I just read about running a board prepped for re-capping through a dishwasher, is this with or without detergent?

I used some desoldering braid along with a desoldering iron on a PDS Card. There seems to be some resin type residue on the board, (probably from the braid?) does this need to be removed with an agent somewhat more aggressive than just detergent(?) a/o water?

From what I've read, dishwasher without detergent and no dry cycle. Hand dry. Isopropyl alcohol is a good cleaner because it evaporates fast.

Thanks! :b&w:

This from the recapping thread:
techknight wrote:that resin is flux, and you need a can of flux remover :-) works wonders. alcohol will do it too, but it takes more scrubbing.

Isopropyl alcohol did the trick, no more goo! :approve:

Soldering the RA Female PDS connector in place of the straight connector on the SuperMac IIsi Video Adapter was a success!

Thanks, comrades! [:D]
