2300c LCD compatible w/270c MoBo?

Postby Trash80toHP_Mini » 13 Apr 2012, 16:56

I was just thought I'd ask beforehand, if anyone knew offhand whether I'd damage either the LCD or the MoBo if I "just do'd it!" :?:

I tried a 2300c screen on a 280c base and the connector doesn't match up. It made me very sad.

Not as sad as blowing either side to smithereens, I'll wager! [;)]

There must be some keying to keep it from being treid . . . the 2300c MoBo runs all previous LCDs and there's only one Color LCD Connector type . . .

Just tried it, the connector fits fine. Hooked up a questionable 2300c LCD Lid to the 270c Base on the MiniDock and it booted, nothing blew up (that I've found so far) but the 2300c LCD was blank and iti booted to the startup screen on the MiniDock's connection to the Sony 17.

I'll try more later, after work, that's enough for a lunch hour! :approve:

Hmmm I wonder why it didn't fit my 280c. Well, they are all gone now so I can't try again. It was one of the first things I wanted to try when I accidentally put them next to each other on the table.

Actually, I deeeeed a boo-boo! I grabbed a 270c(?) LCD by mistake . . . dunno, my place looks like a Duo production facility exploded ATM. :-/

. . . now if I could just find that 2300c LCD/frame around here somewhere . . . ::)

The 2300's LCD is larger and less centered than the 270c (and 280c) LCDs. Someone told me the 270cand 280c LCDs are different, but I haven't been able to confirm/disprove this.

My place is starting to get warped back into its normal patterns of disarray. I had to provide space in the middle of two workstations for sprinkler testing, but that's done and there's a marked improvement overall.

Now most of the labels on the boxes have a bit closer approximation of what the contents might actually be. :-/

Some scattered thoughts from someone who fiddled with Duos for a long time:

270c and 280c displays are exactly the same internally, and I believe that the same display was used in the 180c, though this I have not seen with my own eyes (the 270c and 280c I have). The 270/280c display will also work on a 280 logic board. In such a case, however, you need the whole assembly, as the plastics etc. are different.

The 2300c display actually seems to be based on a different technology, since as well as being physically larger and off-centred, it is recognizable as a "standard" screen of the period, whereas the 270/280c display is very different -- being glassy and less pixellated, almost like a modern MacBook's.

When I do fire it up, whic is not often these days, I like to use my 270c in B&W, as it is gem-like and just beautiful, but because of the size and larger resolution, the 2300c screen is easier on the eye at my age.

Much the same "glassy" effect, btw, is also what you have on a PowerBook 180 in greyscale, and this is why people rave about them. That screen is better than, say, a Compact's CRT.

The 2300c display will not connect to the 270/280c logic board. Been there and tried that; no workie.

i think the 2300c display may be of early LVDS type. not sure. But the 270c is a parallel display.

They have to have the same connector, I would think, because the 2300 PPC upgrade path had to work from the 210 right up through 280. That's why it's so fun to play around with on the inside. B&W/Grayscale on one connector and all the color LCDs on the other.

Best of all was provision made for running IDE drives alongside the internal SCSI bus/connector for an upgraded Duo's legacy SCSI HDD! :approve:

This is why I've started asking generic questions instead of trying to research everything on my own. You guys already know and everyone benefits from your input . . .
. . . and I can take a more leisurely approach to the research I do for my hacking! [;)]

Still though, it doesnt mean they couldnt use 2 different standards on the same connector. There might be a keyway/ID pin that tells the ASIC which mode to send. Which the older boards dont support the second mode while the 2300 ROM does. Then again, you never know.
