Icons for old machines in Specs pages

I see that you have icons from IconFactory for many of the older machines - while this is nice and quaint, has anyone investigated the possibility of asking the widget:widget people if we could use their Magnum Opus icons on the 68kMLA wiki for hardware?

I had Magnum Opus on my mac os x box, long ago, and I can attest that the icons within are of the highest quality.

(Also, if it's not inappropriate I'd be willing to ask them myself.)

I asked permission for the IF icons. If the ones you mention would be better representations, then by all means, ask! The worst that can happen is they say "no".

Well, according to widget : widget's Terms and Conditions page, their icons are all available under Creative Commons noncommercial and/or commercial licenses.

Icons with the noncommercial license are free for noncommercial use, including noncommercial websites. I believe this would qualify as a noncommercial website.

Icons for commercial use cost $9.99 a year for the license.

From their T&C page, it sounds like *ALL* of their icons are available for noncommercial use, with some also available for commercial use.

According to the badge on their icon archive page, but the Magnum Opus set is non-commercial-only. Which means we're free to use it on here, as long as we give them proper credit, aren't charging any money anywhere, and don't modify the icons.

Argh, Now I wish I still had an Account - I had Magnum Opus for a while but as it was in OS X icon format and not png, I couldn't get it off my drive conventionally and didn't know about doubling and the like at the time...

But yeah, I'm all in favour of using Magnum Opus as the icon set for old hardware, it's more comprehensive and better quality than the IF stuff, and available in 128*128 (good for icons in specs pages) and 32*32 (good for userboxes) at least

I've seen sites that say the icons are free for non-profit (i.e. personal) desktop use, but not allowing www use. Are we sure no such distinction is made here?

Well, according to widgetwidget:

Non-commercial icon sets and desktops are released under the following Creative Commons License:

In other words, you can use them on as many computers as you like, or on non-commercial websites/software programmes (this excludes Shareware).

I've got the icons...how do I convert them to PNGs, saving the transparency levels?

They appear to be saved as resource fork icons, which makes extracting them a bit of a pain. This method seems to work:

1. Get info on the file in the Finder.
2. Click on the icon in the upper left corner and copy.
3. Open Preview.
4. Select "New From Clipboard" from the file menu.
5. Save as a PNG.

Voila!

Pasting into Photoshop seems to disregard the transparency. I'm sure an Applescript could be set up to do it automagically, but it's not hugely time consuming to do it by hand.

I did a handful recently, and uploaded them to the wiki. They look very nice at larger sizes. At 32px, I think I prefer the isometric view of the Icon Factory icons. YMMV.

I'm cropping the PNGs just a hair so that when scaled down to icon-like sizes, you get as much detail as possible.
