Anyone ever see one of these? They were apparently made only for the French market, and combined a 9600 modem with telephony and fax functionality.

Wow. Minitel? I got one of those in my closet (found it at a garage sale). Can't figure out what to do with it. Looks like a hacking project, but I have no time/money/knowledge to do anything with it. Anyone wanna buy it? I would say $0.00 + shipping
comes with CRT (Black and white), Chicklet keyboard (built in) and a AT keyboard port on the back.
Preliminary operational tests were inconclusive (the damn thing blew up).

It won't work (or, rather, do anything useful) unless you go to France, and I don't know if the French Minitel system is still in operation there or not.

Ah. I remember reading about Minitel in French class. It seems like the system is still going strong. You can actually download an emulator from http://www.minitelfr.com/telecharger/index.html. Login ZXNET1 password DEMFTD gives you a small demo of the service.

Minitel looks like a cool idea.
I wonder why the massive Bell System did not come up with it in the late 70s instead.

Sadly, Minitel service is finally on the chopping block - it only has until June 30, 2012, then it's gone.

Interesting that it corresponds with the end of MobileMe.

Too bad it didn't have a square grille to better match the CC to have a little Mini Me sitting next to it ...

Did Apple design this? Or did they allow the French to source this out? It's odd that it looks exactly like a Mini Color Classic, despite the fact Apple already had some designs which were already suited for this task ...

I hadn't noticed the CC connection, but you are right.

Hack in an iPod Classic, get MinivMac on it, and you'd have a compacted-Compact Mac. Ho ho.
