Source for iMac "Core 2 Duo" LCD?

Postby Gary_W » 24 Jul 2012, 02:33

I am trying to fix an iMac "Core 2 Duo" for a friend. The hard drive is making the "click of death" but also there is no video displayed on the screen. Not a flicker of any light. I am not sure if replacing the LCD will fix it, or if the problem is on the logic board, but I thought if I could find one, it was worth a try.

If I can find an LCD, they are $200+! Apparently they are hard to come by as they are plagued by a line or lines down the screen. Anyway, if anyone has a source for a replacement LCD at a reasonable price, please let me know. The number on the screen is LM171W02 (TL)(B1). I have read it can take a (TL)(B2) also.

Thanks for any info.

Gary

P.S. I replaced the hard drive with a spare and it exhibits the same symptoms a mithrandir's recent post. (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=18974)
I will be watching with interest....

The original, white Core 2 Duo from 2006? Does it "bong"? If not, the Radeon X1600 is probably shot. A reflow may fix it, may not. If it does "bong", the backlight inverter may be shot keeping the display from lighting. I've had one that had half of the backlight inverter fail so the screen was dim. With a failed inverter, you should be able to see the image on the screen by holding a flashlight very close to it.

Those would be the common display problems, I believe.

If you think that the problem is with the inverter and it is the white, 20" C2D from 2006, send me a PM because I think I have the inverter you need.

Yes, it bongs! I held a flashlight to it last night but didn't see anything. I will try another, brighter flashlight tonight. It's the 17" model.

Upon further examination, LED3 does not light up, indicating it cannot talk to the video system. Could be bad caps or a logic board. I guess I'll start looking for a logic board.

The Radeon x1600 in those like to fry. A reflow may fix it. Techknight here may be able to do a pro reflow job.

I found a replacement logic board on eBay. All is good. The LCD was fine after all.
