Powerbook 540 bundled software?

Postby iknow » 19 Jun 2011, 15:45

I recently got a Powerbook 540. After tracking down and installing 7.1.1 for powerbooks 500, I noticed there is not even a folder for applications.

These are the floppies I have:

InstallMeFirst.img
Disk Tools.img
Goodies.img
Additions.img
Printing & Fonts.img

So my question is:

What additional software did you get on floppies or installed on the HD when you bought a Powerbook 540 at introduction?

I've also got a PB 190 and that one has ClarisWorks installed and even a little interactive application, the "Powerbook 190 tour", that explains that the PB 190 is a "complete solution" and comes with ClarisWorks and access to eWorld and more.

I figure that since the pb540 cost much more than the pb190, it would have had some bundled software as well?

There were two configurations for the 540 depending on whether it had the Global Village modem or not.

As well as the Macintosh Basics folder there was an Applications folder with:

ARA Client 2.0.1
Calendar 1.5
eWorld 1.0
File Assistant 1.0
HyperCard Player 2.2
MacCheck 1.0.5
MacLinkPlus 7.5

Apple install floppy sets generally only contain the relevant system software. All the other goodies are usually provided on a restore CD.

Thank you! Thats exactly the info I was looking for.

This forum is great :-)

After posting I stumbled upon this article
http://books.google.com/books?id=pjgEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA61&ots=97YvmeNXkI&dq=infoworld%20powerbook%20540&pg=PA61#v=onepage&q&f=false
from InfoWorld 1994 where they talk about a "Powerbook Mobility Bundle" which I guess was a marketing term for some of those same apps.

When you talk of restore CD, are you refering to what is sometimes called "Apple Legacy Software Restore Disk" , I thought that one was only a OS collection?

No the Legacy CD pretty much only has the OS. I'm guessing that the PB540 may have come with a CD that was used to restore the system. That or a larger set of floppies.

I don't know what the original PB540 box would have included. Someone here might be able to answer that.
