    Mac Mini

After the fun of trying to get an old CanoScan LIDE 70 to work, I may partition the drive and install Mountain Lion. This appears to be the last version of MacOS supported by the drivers. The scanner worked with my Lombard, but was quite slow. The iBook G4 worked better, but sometimes the 1024...

    Mac Mini

Couldn’t resist upgrading Mac OS to Catalina so things like Steam, Chrome, Firefox and Visual Studio Code would install. I’m tempted to try Linux or Chrome OS Flex on it as well.

SSD and 8 GB memory are installed, El Capitan installed. Now installing updates. Once the updates are done I’ll install the cover.

    Mac Mini

The USB installer worked. Unfortunately since it is using the original mechanical hard disk it takes 30 minutes after rebooting to finish the installation. I’ll put the SSD in and try again later today.

    Mac Mini

The original hard disk and memory sticks are back in and it's booting..... slowly. I'm guessing the reason the screen was white with the SSD in there was that it had Windows 10 on it. Still trying to reinstall El Capitan, getting an error message when it is loading installation information...

    Mac Mini

Memory and SDD installed. It bongs, but stays on a gray screen. I’ll put the original 4GB back in and see if it gets any further.

    PowerMac G4!

Today I received a pair of OWC 512MB DDR modules, bringing it up to 1.75GB. Apparently someone bought them a long time ago, opened the box they came in but not the packaging of the memory modules.

    Mac Mini

Today I received the Mac Mini’s older brother: a 2009 Mac Mini. For some reason I can’t use internet restore to install 10.11. I have 2 4GB SO-DIMM modules and a 240 GB SSD to install to upgrade the 4GB and 250GB SATA hard disk currently installed. I have the feeling that by the time I’m done...

After applying the update to 10.4.11, booting to Tiger results in a black screen

    PowerMac G4!

Verified that the startech.com adapter works with Mac OS 9. The fan is much louder than it is running Tiger.

    PowerMac G4!

Unfortunately I don't know the answer to that yet. Mac OS 9 hasn't been installed, and I assume when I partitioned the SSD that I didn't tell it to install drivers for Mac OS 9. I do plan to wipe the drive and set it up properly to allow OS 9 and OS X to boot from it. Images for both have been...

    PowerMac G4!

Now that the SATA -> Molex adapters have arrived, the power supply can now be secured in the case. It doesn’t look pretty, but it’s not going to move either. I closed the side door, connected it to video and power and it works! Now all that remains is to replace the internal speaker. I...

    PowerMac G4!

Removed all of the ATX extension cables routed to one of the back slots on the G4. The SFX power supply is now sitting on top of the optical drive bays and the case closes! The ATX and P4 power connectors are attached to the MDD-ATX adapter cable. I need to get some Velcro or 3M command strips...

    PowerMac G4!

The SFX power supply arrived today. Compared to the ATX power supply that was connected to it, it's really small. Unfortunately, the SFX power supply has no Molex power connectors. Despite the vast amount of cables I have lying around, I don't have any SATA to Molex power adapters. I have...

So far the StarTech.com adapter works well. However, they are close to $20 on Amazon.

    PowerMac G4!

I finally ordered a SFX power supply made by a company I have actually heard of. I'm hoping I will use it more once I don't have to worry about the ATX power supply falling off the top of the case.

    PowerMac G4!

I sent the power supply back to the seller of the ATX adapter cable for a credit. It didn’t work and having someone else service it was going to be around $90 - a bit much for me at the time. I ordered a couple of SATA to IDE adapters that plug directly in the logic board, but haven’t tried...

    PowerMac G4!

I removed all outer plastic parts from the case, and there was some hair and dust. Most of it was near the air intake holes on the front panel and behind the optical bay fan, but eww :) . I bought a StarLink SATA to IDE adapter instead of a SATA PCI card. Given how small 2.5" SATA drives are...

    PowerMac G4!

A dual 867mhz G4 processor card arrived today. Woohoo! I want to replace the original hard disk with an SSD and install MacOS 9 and X to it before doing the processor swap.
